Frans de Waal (1948)

Frans de Waal was trained as a zoologist and ethologist in the European tradition and obtained a Ph.D. in biology from the University of Utrecht, in 1977 on behavior in macaques, followed by a study on the world's largest captive colony of chimpanzees at the Arnhem Zoo.

In the eighties he moved to the USA where he studied behavior in monkeys at the Wisconsin Regional Primate Research Center, in chimpanzees at the Yerkes National Primate Research Center, and in bonobos at the San Diego Zoo. At present he holds a joint position in the Psychology Department of Emory University and at Yerkes , both in Atlanta. His most recent work deals with the evolutionary origin of human morality, and the implications of that we know about bonobos for models of human social evolution.
His work in our exhibition “Family of Man” is a selection of the thousands of photographs of primates that he took in the course of his studies in the Netherlands, in the USA and elsewhere, taken from his book My Family Album (University of California Press, 2003).
