Michiel Jansen (1959)

Michiel Jansen (1959) studied at the Art College at Utrecht, and has a degrees as a teacher in visual arts and art history. Slate is at the basis of all his work. He connects slabs of slate, sometimes two layers thick, to create different shapes. He also creates 3-D works which combine smooth slate surfaces with rough, broken surfaces perpendicular to the slate surface. This combination brings the different characteristics of this age-old material into play. Usually he also adds pigments, which contrast with the structure and the gray and black hues of the slate itself.

His sculptures tend to be either static and compact, or loose in shape en rythm  These different visual aspects relate, on one hand,  to a need for security, and on the other hand to a desire rid oneself of all deadwood in the pursuit of self-realization.

Michiel Jansen exhibited, amongst other places, at the Zonnehof  and Museum Flehite in Amersfoort, and the galeries Anderwereld/Katuin  (Groningen), Modern Art (Nijmegen), De Beerenburght (Eck en Wiel), De Bakkerij (Bergen, Limburg), “Le Besset” (Ardeche, France), Nanky de Vreeze (Amsterdam), and the  Provinciehuis Flevoland (Lelystad). His work is present in various private, bussiness  and public collections.
